The Last Mission

On the Night of 22.2.99 Eitan led the Paratroopers Recon warriors on a mission, which took place east of the Lebanon security zone.

The mission was hitting Hizbullah saboteurs on their way to attacking IDF forces.  The night was cold and the force climbed to 4000 feet above sea level to Kala’t Jabur, north to Chune, not far from Maydun. The area, north of what was the “security zone” is rocky and characterized by dense vegetation, limiting their range of vision  to a few feet. A few minutes after midnight the force arrived at their positions.

Eitan led David Granit’s force to its position. He went down to check the position with Lieutenant Liraz Titto, an engineering officer who had joined the force. Eitan and Liraz got to just a few feet from the saboteurs’ position when a long burst hit both of them. They fell dead. Lieutenant David Granit, warriors team commander, came to his senses first, and started to manage the battle with great heroism. More soldiers joined the battle to hit the saboteurs. David and five more soldiers were hit. When one of the officers came to David, David said that everything was OK and sent the officer to check another soldier. When the officer came back to check David’s condition, David was already dead. For his bravery David was awarded the O.C. Territorial Command Citation

The force was rescued by helicopters with the cover of attack helicopters and artillery.

When the force came back to the unit they started to train for more missions, some of them cause the death of Hizbullah saboteurs.
